The Lagos State government is set to construct a forensic laboratory in Ganyingbo, Badagry, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
The laboratory will be of world class standard to put an end to unresolved crimes, among other functions, in Nigeria,
Commissioner for Science and Technology, Adebiyi Mabadeje, said at the weekend during a ministerial briefing that the essence of the forensic laboratory is to aid police investigations so that perpetrators of heinous crimes are brought to justice.
“The project will assist the judiciary in the prosecution of criminal cases by authenticating evidence of prosecutors to get conviction. It will help reduce to the barest minimum, cases of unresolved crimes,” he added.
According to Mabadeje, the project will be implemented in phases and a consultant has been commissioned to oversee the project.
“Already, five hectares of land have been secured at Ganyingbo Sea Beach along the Badagry axis of the state for the project. Soil test for the site has been done and very soon, perimeter fencing of the site will commence.
“A need analysis report is already completed. This gives comprehensive adequacy and adjacent analysis, both of space and materials and design type,” he stated.
The commissioner also disclosed that the government has approved rural electrification in 10 remote communities in the state which would be solar-driven.
He said the project included the provision of street lights in the market square, a solar-powered borehole with two water tanks to provide potable water for the villagers, construction of community hall, among others.
