Ten Nigerian scrabble players and five officials have been confirmed to participate in the annual scrabble tournament, tagged “King’s Cup”, holding from 20-24 June, 2012, in Thailand.

The annual tournament, which Nigeria failed to honour last year enters its 27th edition this year. The Nigerian trip would be sponsored by the Nigeria Scrabble Federation, NSF.

P.M.Sports gathered yesterday from the Secretary General of NSF, James Eakyns, that the federation decided to participate at this edition of the tourney to ensure that Nigerian scrabble players remain in top form towards the Africa Scrabble Championship that will hold in Kenya later in the year.

He also said the players would use the tourney to accumulate more points that would improve their ranking.

He said: “Despite the huge financial implication it would cost us to take ten players and five officials to far away Thailand to participate in the tourney; the federation has deemed it fit to bear the cost for the benefit of ensuring that our players remain fit and competitive for the African Championship in November.

“With the added advantage for our players to gain some valuable points that would improve their ranking on World English Language Scrabble Players Association, WESPA, ratings.”

P.M.Sports learnt that the ten players that would represent Nigeria at the King’s Cup would be revealed after the Technical Committee of NSF releases the national ratings later in the month.

The Nigeria team would leave for Thailand on 17 June for the 3 days tourney.
