Banker Docked Over N3.1m Theft

A 29-year old employee of Fidelity Bank Plc., Blessing Enyie, was on Thursday docked at a Somolu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, charged with conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretences and stealing.

Enyie, however, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge.

The prosecutor, Inspector Ajala Ebi, told the court that Enyie collected N3.1 million from Mr. Oboise Lawrence and nine others who were customers of the bank.

He alleged that the defendant, who resides at 14, Aboaba Street, Ogba in Lagos, committed the offences between April 2009 and April 26, 2011 when she was at the Sabo branch of the bank.

According to him, the defendant, being a marketer representing the bank, obtained the money from the customers of the bank with the intent to defraud.

“The accused and her accomplice received money on behalf of the bank under the pretext that they would deposit the said money in the bank account, a representation they knew to be false.

“Enyie and the others, now at large, on the same date, time and place, did steal the sum of N3.1 million belonging to Lawrence and other customers of Fidelity Bank PLC,” Ebi said.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 312, 258 and 409 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

Magistrate Titus Abolariwa granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000, with two sureties and adjourned the case to June 14 for trial.
