Enyeama now Super Eagles captain

Super Eagles’ Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi, has picked goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama as team Captain for the June 3 match against Namibia.

The Nigerian senior national football team is in Calabar ahead of the clash with the Brave Warriors.

The match is the opening game in their qualification campaign for the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil.

Team spokesman, Ben Alaiya, who revealed this in a statement, said Enyeama would continue in that role until the substantive skipper, Joseph Yobo, recovered from his injuries.

Yobo, who was injured on May 13 during a Turkish League game for Fenerbahce, was left out of the list of players invited for the Eagles’ three matches in June.

“At the Monday morning training session, which commenced at about 7.30 a.m. inside the University of Calabar mini-stadium, Keshi simply addressed Enyeama as captain, and all and sundry concurred,’’ Alaiya said.

The spokesman added that the team’s training, which was conducted under the scorching early morning sun, had 22 players in attendance.

“It was only one of them, Papa Idris, who was not fully involved in action as he was still recovering from past knocks.

“He was, however, able to jog and run around gracefully under the supervision of team physiotherapist, Olawale Oladejo,’’ he said.

Alaiya said the team’s overseas-based professionals, who trained on Monday, were Sone Aluko, Victor Moses, Ikechukwu Uche, Efe Ambrose and Fengor Ogude.

“Others are Elderson Echejile, Gege Soriola, Ekigho Ehiosun, Ahmed Musa and Vincent Enyeama,’’ he said.

Alaiya said the players were joined by the 12 home-based stars led by Warri Wolves FC goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim, who were invited last weekend. (NAN)
