Edem Hopeful Of Good Outing

Nigerian and African number one female table tennis player, Offiong Edem, has assured that her inability to be playing for a team now would not affect her performance in the singles event of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Cross River State-born table tennis player, who last played for ALCL Grauno Quailly Table Tennis Club of France, said her agent is currently searching for a reputable club for her. She added that she would prefer a German table tennis club since the country is among the top rated in Europe.

The current African number one, who won gold medal for Nigeria at the last All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique, explained that herself and Nigerian ace female ping ponger, Funke Oshonaike, have enough experience to stand them a chance to qualify for the main chart of the table tennis event of the London Olympics. She stressed that the proposed Team Nigeria’s tour of Germany for a month would also help them to excel at the Summer Games.

The 26 years old player however, advised the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, NTTF, to put in place an aggressive developmental programme and also source for corporate bodies’ sponsorship so that more competition will be played in the country.

Edem said she would like to see more Nigerian players featuring in International Table Tennis Federation, ITTF’s approved competitions in order to acquire points on the world ranking.

She added that the Egyptian Table Tennis Federation is the fast developing African table tennis body because of its huge investment in the sport.
