Optima Vs Avensis: Who Wears The Crown

Is time running out for the established contenders in the family car class? The new Kia Optima has already proven it has what it takes to upset the old order, beating talented rival as VW to contend for the crown of Car of the Year. With its bold styling, upmarket cabin and fuel efficient 1.7-litre engine, the Optima is a huge leap forward over its woeful predecessor. Whatís more, it comes packed with standard kit and has an attractive price, while the package is backed up by Kiaís industry-leading warranty.
But the Optima isnít the only new model charged with toppling the class leaders. The Toyota Avensis is already a familiar face in this market, and has just benefited from a thorough mid-life revamp in a bid to improve its chances. Fresh looks, an overhauled chassis and a raft of changes aimed at slashing emissions top the list of enhancements, while a competitive price, generous haul of kit, prove the Avensis wonít be outshone by Kia in the value stakes.

Success in the large family car class isnít easy to come by. With more choice for buyers and higher standards than ever, any newcomer needs to shine. So, which of our contenders here has what it takes? If youíre going to gatecrash the ultra-competitive large family car class, youíd better make sure you have a contender thatís up to scratch ñ and Kia has certainly succeeded with its new Optima. An attractive price, low running costs and long list of standard kit definitely should help the saloon take a well deserved victory in its quest for the COTY encounter.
With its subtle bodykit and head-turning 18-inch alloys, the racy Kia certainly looks the part. And as with other models in the line-up, it has Jaguar XF styling cues and distinctive LED daytime running lights. Climb aboard and itís clear Kia has been equally ambitious inside. The wraparound dash is attractively styled and logically laid out, while the switchgear operates precisely. High-grade materials and robust construction add to the premium feel, although the shiny wood trim on our car felt a little cheap. As youíd expect from a Kia, occupants in the rear are treated to plenty of legroom, but tall passengers will find their heads brushing the rear of the carís sloping roofline.
Thereís no doubt the Avensis has been significantly improved, clearly going from strength to strength. Itís a quantum-leap improvement over the old Avensis and gives the brand a genuine class contender. With its sleek looks, classy cabin and decent driving dynamics, this car is a genuinely desirable choice. Itís slightly more expensive to buy than the Kia, and is likely to be more costly to run, but we think itís worth the extra. Will this cost the Toyota dear?
