NUT counsels Ekiti govt on teachers’ assessment
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Sunday urged the Ekiti State Government to explore professional options in assessing the performance of its teachers.
A statement signed by the General Secretary of the union, Mr Ikpe Obong noted with concern the insistence of the government to carry out a teachers’ needs assessment and competency exercise in spite of wide opposition to it.
It wondered why teachers who were duly certified by professional bodies such as the Teachers Registration Council (TRCN) must be subjected to another “competency assessment’’.
“It is indeed strange and incomprehensible for government to conduct a competency assessment for teachers, majority of who had been professionally certified and duly registered by the TRCN.
“The union is of the strong view that the government’s intention to assess the training needs of teachers can sufficiently be achieved through the use of questionnaire; a veritable tool.
“This could be embedded in the annual performance and evaluation report form usually completed by teachers in the service every year,” it said.
The statement added, “it is our candid advice to Ekiti State Government to review its stand on the matter.”
