PDP sweeps council polls in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom Independent Electoral Commission on Sunday declared the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of Saturday’s local council poll in the state.Mrs Gloria Ukpong, Chairman of the commission who announced this in Uyo said the party won all the 31 chairmanship seats and majority of the ward councilors.

She noted that the result had already been declared by the returning officers of the various local government areas, adding that the full details of the result would be made public on Monday.

She said, “This is the summary of the results as released by the returning officers in all the wards and local government areas; details of the results will be made available on Monday.We acknowledge the fact that we have received some protest from some quarters about various disagreements on issues in their different units.

“And the law has directed that at the end of all elections, the state government will set up election petition tribunal who will have the capacity to handle such protests.”

According to the result, the PDP has also won 325 councillorship seats out of the 329 contested.

It shows that the United Nigeria Peoples Party (UNPP) won the council seat in Esit Eket, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) won in Ikono and Mbo while the All Nigeria People Party (ANPP) secured the slot in Ukanafun.

The opposition already decried the election as farce.
