Gwar Eyes NPL Goal Crown

Sibi Gwar is the perfect journey-man who is experiencing his best season as a professional at Niger Tornadoes after scoring his 12th goal this term to go top of the goals chart.

Gwar has played for Ebonyi Angels, Kwara United, Enyimba, Lobi Stars and a second spell at United before his adventure with modest Tornadoes since 2010.

“It’s exciting to be top scorer in the Nigeria Premier League. My target is to equal Jude Aneke’s 20-goalmark or raise the bar,” he said to SuperSport.com.

The decision to accept Justin Tenger’s invitation to Tornadoes when he was headed for Plateau United last term has yielded dividend.

Gwar had a torrid first round under the legendary Kadiri Ikhana at Kwara United and decided to find succour elsewhere.

It was his second time at United, but the experience was not as sweet as his initial romance, where he was scouted by Aba Millionaires, Enyimba.

Before his exit from United, Gwar couldn’t score a goal and scored 10 goals during the second half of the season.

In fact, he scored two goals against United on his Tornadoes debut.

“I had to leave Ilorin for a place where I’ll be assured of playing time. I was to join Plateau United, but the Tornadoes gaffer invited me,” he stated.

2011/2012 season

Gwar started slowly this term but later joined the top scorers and was four goals behind Enugu Rangers’ Chikeluba Ofoedu, who scored ten goals to finish as top scorer during the mid-season break.

Bookmakers had tipped him for the exit door at cash-strapped Tornadoes during the mid-term break with title contenders, Kano Pillars, offering a lifeline.

Besides Pillars, his last team, Kwara United joined the race for his services.

Ironically, he made a U-turn to Tornadoes at a time many thought he was headed for Kwara United.

“I had an agreement with Kwara United, but they told me another story. As a result, I returned to Tornadoes,” he said to SuperSport.com.

His decision to stick with Niger Tornadoes appears to be one of the best decisions taken by the forward as he has become the toast of the league with 12 goals.

Gwar’s five-star outing has placed him on the radar of other suitors in the NPL.

SuperSport.com learnt that Pillars and Enyimba are likely to lure the forward if they eventually return to Africa.

However, Gwar has his eyes abroad.

“I don’t know about my future. Now I will study opportunities, but I want to play outside the country,” he told SuperSport.com.
