Senator Oluremi Tinubu (ACN-Lagos Central) on Tuesday announced bursary awards, totalling N6.2 million, to 624 students in her constituency.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the beneficiaries will receive N10,000 each in the Oluremi Tinubu Post-Secondary School Scholarship Scheme (PSSS) launched on August 16, 2011.

Speaking at the third edition of her senatorial Town Hall Meeting in Lagos, Mrs. Tinubu said that the bursary was to defray the cost of purchasing textbooks.

She told the meeting that she planned to establish a N43.2 million skills acquisition centre, a conventional street lighting facility estimated to cost N25 million and another solar street light project at about N4.8 million.

“I also intend to install a 500 KVA transformer estimated at N7.5 million and a drug treatment and rehabilitation centre estimated to cost N200 million in the constituency,” she said.

She explained that the rehabilitation centre would help reduce the incidence and effects of drug abuse among the youth while the skills acquisition and training centre would also assist unemployed youths.

“Our challenges are many but they are not insurmountable. With hard work, sacrifice, resilience and perseverance, they can be overcome,” Tinubu said.

She assured her constituents that she would facilitate the entrenchment of true fiscal federalism in the constitution in accordance with her campaign manifesto.

“I hope that through my appointment as a member of the Senate Constitution Review Committee, I will be able to resolve the impasse surrounding the creation of additional local governments in Lagos State and the ambiguities created in that regard,” she said.

In his remarks, the Lagos State Chairman of the ACN, Chief Henry Ajomale, commended Tinubu’s efforts and urged other elected public officials to emulate her.

“Since her coming into office, Mrs. Tinubu has affected the lives of the people of her constituency in tremendous ways.

“This is what democracy should be; her transparency and accountability to the people that elected her is what every elected public officer should be,” Ajomale said.

A total of 624 people from the Lagos Central Senatorial District had on March 9 received N20,000 each in the Oluremi Tinubu Petty Trader’s Empowerment Capital Scheme (PETECS).

Tuesday’s meeting was attended by the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, Mr. Demola Seriki, a former Minister of State for Defence, among other dignitaries.
