The police has granted bail to shamed Representative Farouk Lawan arrested on Thursday for alleged involvement in a $620,000 bribery scam.

The Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Frank Mba, said Lawan was granted bail on Saturday evening in Abuja according to the law.

On whether the bail was on self recognition, Mba said “no”, adding that the lawmaker met the conditions stipulated by law.

The police spokesman however declined to give details of the bail conditions but said Lawan would continue to report to the police until investigation into the matter was concluded.

Lawan was detained after he reported to the police on 14 June, in response to allegation of receiving the said amount as bribe from Mr Femi Otedola.

Otedola had claimed that Lawan demanded for the money to remove the names of his companies on the list of those indicted by the Ad-hoc Committee on Fuel Subsidy Regime set up by the House of Representatives.

The house had on Friday suspended the lawmaker, who had chaired the committee, to allow for proper investigation on the alleged bribery scam.
