Doping: Nigerian Boxer Gets 4 Years Ban
Nigerian-born British heavyweight boxer, Larry Olubamiwo, has been suspended for four years, having admitted taking 13 banned substances.
The 33-year-old from east London tested positive to EPO after his bout against Sam Sexton in January.
It was in June that the former Southern Area heavyweight titleholder admitted to taking over a dozen performance enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids and human growth hormone over a six-year period both as an amateur and as a professional boxer.
All of Olubamiwo’s titles and results from January 1, 2006, have been forfeited.
“This is an extreme example of someone who has engaged in an intentional and uncompromising doping programme over a sustained period with little or no regard for his own health,” said UK Anti-Doping chief executive Andy Parkinson.
“The list of substances Olubamiwo admits to taking is both alarming and disappointing. However, he is now banned for a period of four years thanks to information which informed our testing programme. This reinforces the fact that testing in the UK is targeted and intelligence-led, and that law enforcement has an invaluable role to play in the fight against doping.”
