Two years after it changed the game in the telecoms market in favour of subscribers, Airtel Nigeria last week again radically altered the subscriber cost equation by offering a timing-based subscription service priced at 10k per second or N6 per minute.

Speaking at the launch in Lagos, Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director, Deepak Srivastava harped on the company’s ability to respond with packages that address consumers’ needs.

Srivastava stated: “Airtel has grown to be the fifth largest telecommunications operator in the world because of innovativeness. We are also endeared to the people because we offer the most affordable and convenient choices to enable them communicate, build business and social relations.”

Airtel’s flagship brand 2Good, unveiled in 2010 remains the first service by any telecommunications company giving telephone users the chance of pocket-friendly uniform call rates across all the networks in Nigeria.

“While the 2Good call rate of 20k per second is still highly competitive, Airtel continues to improve the offering to endear itself further to telephone users in Nigeria. We will continue to change the paradigm in the market,” Srivastava said.

At the launch, Chief Marketing Officer, Mr. Olu Akanmu, painted vivid pictures of consumer profiles in support of the offering. He made an example of Tonia and Tony, two lovers whose different work locations on Victoria Island and Ikeja respectively as well as busy schedules do not allow the level of personal contact they desire.

“One is a banker while the other earns a living in a manufacturing company,” the CMO said.

“The 2GoodTime would enable such persons engage in intimate discussions during lunch hour at a call rate of 10k per second. This will no doubt help them overcome the strain that distance would have put on their relationship,” Akanmu pointed out.
