Onabogun Upsets Olape At Chess Tourney

A s the 35th Nigerian Breweries International Chess Championship continues at the Sports Indoor Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos, Kolade Onabogun, yesterday created an upset by defeating the defending champion, Bunmi Olape in the 4th round.

Onabogun, who defeated the defending champion is going for more. In a chat with P.M.Sports, Onabogun, a bronze medalist at the 2007 All Africa Games in Algeria, revealed that he and the defending champion were former team-mates.

“I know Bunmi very well and both of us had beaten eachother in previous tournaments. We were team-mates at the 2007 All Africa Games in Algeria and we spent lots of time together in the camp, while we were preparing for the Games,” Onabogun said.

However, Onabogun, who had not featured in a competitive tournament in five years, vowed to remain focused to continue his winning spree.

“I still have more games to play in this tournament and I need to be focused so that no player will surprise me. Many of them know that I had not competed in any championship since 2007,” Onabogun said.
