Major-General Henry Ayoola, the Special Task Force (STF) Commander in Jos, has confirmed that Sen. Gyang Dantong died in stampede in Barkin Ladi on Sunday.

Also killed in the stampede was Gyang Filani, Majority Leader in the Plateau State House of Assembly.

Addressing a news conference in Jos on Monday, Ayoola said the duo were at a burial when they were attacked, adding that in the stampede, they slumped and could not be revived.

Ayoola said that the duo died at General Hospital, Barkin Ladi, debunking claims that they were shot dead.

He warned the populace to observe the curfew in Jos.

In the latest reaction to the death of the Senator and other victims of the herdsmen violence in Plateau state, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, urged security agencies to rise to the challenge by fishing out the perpetrators of the violence.

He said that the incessant killings in the state and other parts of the country must stop.

Tambuwal described Sen. Gyang Dantong, as a man of peace whose death was regrettable.

He urged security agencies to provide adequate protection for citizens of the country at all times.

Tambuwal said the National Assembly would continue to liaise with other arms of government and security agencies to find lasting solution to the spate of violence bedevilling the nation.

The speaker said that criminal groups were hiding under different guises to cause mayhem in the country, urging Nigerians to remain resolute in their quest for lasting peace.

He said that Nigeria was greater than any group, expressing optimism that “this dark period in our history would soon become a thing of the past”.

It will be recalled that Danton and James Gyang of the Plateau State House of Assembly were allegedly killed in an attack at Maseh Village in Riyom Local Council of Plateau.
