Woman Detained Over N10m Fraud

An Ibadan-based businesswoman, has been arrested and detained by police detectives attached to Special Fraud Unit, Milverton, Ikoyi, Lagos over an allegation of fraudulent activities. The suspect, 33, is said to own a supermarket on Ring Road, Ibadan.

She was alleged to have obtained 96 pieces of Hewlett Packard laptop computers in June 2011, from one of the complainants, Mr Dayo Adewumi, Managing Director, Sunad Communication World, Computer Village, Ikeja, at the cost of N105,000 each, totalling N10,080,000.

She was said to have convinced her unsuspecting victim into believing her to be genuine businesswoman by depositing N1.5 million and later issuing a post dated Skye Bank cheque of N8.5 million which later bounced.

The suspect is also alleged to have  approached an Ibadan politician with a story that she won a contract from Lead City University, Ibadan and she obtained N6 million from the man. She is also alleged to have duped a USA-based Nigerian lady of $80,000 and $45,000 from the company in which she worked in the USA. One of her victims,  Mr Dayo Adewumi, told Crime Watch: “I got to know her through a colleague of mine in the office that she got a contract in America to supply 96 pieces of HP laptops. She paid N1.5 million of the total amount of N10.080,000 and we learnt she sold the items at a lesser price of N80,000. She also gave a post-dated cheque which later bounced and since then she had been avoiding me. I got her arrested and detained at Iyaganku Police Station but a fake lawyer came to bail her and she jumped bail.”

The woman is also alleged to have duped her husband, and the case is in court.

The Commissioner of Police, SFU, Mr Tunde Ogunsakin, said: “The suspect is a pathological fraudster who has engaged in fraudulent practices. Members of the public are hereby warned to be watchful as such people are out there in search of innocent victims to defraud.”

The woman who has been rearrested and detained at the SFU, Ikoyi, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ngosi Isintume, will be charged to court tomorrow.
