Cooperative Society Tasks Govt On Poverty Alleviation

The Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Staff Cooperative Multipurpose Society has tasked government at all levels to partner with cooperative societies in effort to eradicate poverty in the country.

Chairman of the cooperative society, Mr. Ojo Adeloye, made this call in an exclusive interview with Business World during the 20th Annual General Meeting of the cooperative society.

Adeloye said one of the ways the government can show its seriousness in tacking poverty is by partnering with credible cooperative societies.

“If government is really serious about tackling poverty in this country, they should partner with us. The best way to fight poverty in this country is through viable cooperative societies. Put money in cooperatives and see how its gets to the people because they will take loan and pay back or it will be deducted from their salaries,”  he said

Beside funds, Adeloye appealed to government to provide land for farming and housing for cooperative members as a way of further empowering them.

Enumerating the achievements of his executive members in the past few years, Adeloye said over N70million has been spent to procure land and household appliances for its members.

He said:  “In the last few years, we have spent over N70million for our members. This include purchase of over 90 hectares of land, completion of our multipurpose hall and purchase of over 30 tricycle for members”

Adeloye noted that his cooperative society is planning to open a block and cement factory where members can buy blocks and cement at affordable price.
