Car Plunges Into Canal

A Nissan Sunny car with registration number Lagos TT 205 AAA plunged into the canal opposite Aladie bus stop along Ikorodu road at about 2:00 a.m. Friday.

According to the District Traffic Officer, DTO, Onipanu Police Station, ASP Lasisi Ogunlade, “a resident came here early this morning to tell us that they heard a bang and some of our officers had to go to the point where the bang was heard and discovered that it was a car that plunged into a canal. The police officers saw the occupant of the car and rescued him.”

The occupant of the car who was reportedly drunk, identified himself as Clement and he told the police officers his car was pushed from the expressway into the canal.

“My car was pushed into the canal by somebody that I did not even know or see and that was how I met myself in this place,” he stated.

The unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC RS 2.15 Lagos Mainland Unit Command, Jibowu, Azeez Adele, who was also at the scene of the accident, told P.M.NEWS that he also got a distress call this morning to come to Ikorodu road,

He said: “From the look of things, the man was over speeding and wasn’t in charge of the car anymore. This may possibly have led to the accident because at that time of the day, the road should be very free so I don’t think any other thing could have caused the accident. This should also serve as a warning to drivers who are always in a haste to take their time while driving.”

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Operation Branch, Zone 11, Anthony who were on a routine patrol sent for a towing van to take the damaged vehicle away.

Operational head of the zone, Fatai Onafeko, said: “it is the duty of LASTMA to ensure that the roads are free from traffic and that was exactly what we did because the accident scene had started causing traffic congestion.”
