Shot Delta state top bureaucrat moved out of state

Mr Okey Ofili, the Head of Service of Delta state, south south Nigeria, who was shot Sunday by suspected kidnappers has been transferred to a hospital outside the state capital.

The Delta Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Charles Muka, disclosed this today.

He also confirmed that Ofili was shot on the right leg at a spot on Okpanam road by persons suspected to be kidnappers.

Ofili was attacked at Summit Road Junction on the Asaba – Benin Highway as he was was returning from church about noon.

The attack was like a Hollywood movie as his assailants’ car suddenly blocked Ofili’s vehicle when it turned into the road from the highway and a gunman from the car jumped out and ordered him out of his car.

Ofili resisted the order and was shot on the leg.

Muka said he was saved by a police patron team, which promptly moved to the scene on hearing the gunshot.

According to him, the swift response of the police to the gunshot sounds prevented the hoodlums from taking the man away as they jumped into their car and ran away on sighting the police vehicle.

“He was quickly rushed to a hospital in the town for treatment but I am informed that he has been moved out of the state capital for better medical attention,’’ he said.

He said that investigation into the incident had commenced, adding that detectives in the command were on the trail of the gangsters.

Meanwhile, the Delta Police Command had arrested six suspects in connection with July 11 kidnap of Dr Hypolite Nwaigbo, an Agbor-based medical practitioner in the state.

Muka said that four of the suspects were arrested on a tip off and that following their confessions, police operatives trailed other members of the gang to Akwukwu-Igbo.

“At Akwukwu-Igbo, two of suspects were arrested while trying to collect N2 million ransom from the wife of the victim,’’ he said.

He said that items recovered from the suspects included one Peugeot 406 saloon car with registration number CH 234 RBD, one Qlink motorcycle and N2 million.

Muka also disclosed that the Vice Principal of Elume Grammar School, Sapele, Mr Daniel Okpobusa, who shot and killed the Principal of the school, Mrs Rosemary Ojuederie on June 28, had been charged to court.

He said that the man was arraigned at a Sapele Magistrate Court on a two-count charge of murder and unlawful possession of firearm. (NAN)

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Charles Mouka, while confirming the incident, promised to give details on Monday.

In another incident, suspected gunmen on Sunday, shot dead a Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) personnel, Mr Iliya Chori, in Kaduna.

Chori, till his death was the State Assistant Focal Officer of MDGs, who was deployed from the State Ministry for Health.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that the official was trailed by his assailants on a motorcycle to his residence at No. 38 Ohinoyi Road, Ungwan-Rimi, GRA in Kaduna.

The Acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Balteh of Kaduna State Police Command, confirmed the incident.

He said that the gunmen did not leave the scene till they were sure that he was dead.

He, however, said that the police were on the trail of the attackers with a view to apprehending them to bring them to justice.

Balteh said the corpse had been taken to the Nigerian Army Reference hospital, Kaduna, and that the police had been to the scene.
