Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) on Monday called on INEC to stop funding the existing political parties as that would ensure that only viable ones survive.

The National Secretary of the party, Malam Buba Galadima, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

According to him, self sustenance will encourage discipline among the virile political parties built to facilitate sustainable development.

He also urged INEC to regulate the role of money in politics through appropriate measures.

Galadima stressed the need for urgent reform geared toward stemming so many atrocities arising from excessive use of money in politics.

He attributed proliferation of parties to the largesse from the government’s coffers, saying violence and legal tussles within the parties were rampant owing largely to government funding.

“Funding of political parties by INEC has become a big business for many political parties to make so much money for doing nothing.

“The idea is odd as it has made the whole scenario to become so untidy and resulted in proliferation of so many non functional political parties as it is in Nigeria today.”

Galadima said any serious political party should be able to fund its activities and by that only the most serious people would run parties and contest elections.
