Man Poisons Friend’s Drink
A 26-year old man, Chidi Ugo, has been arraigned before Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, for allegedly attempting to poison his friend, Jamiu Ogunike, through drink.
Imo State-born Ugo reportedly went with Ogunike to a beer parlour at Idimu bus stop, a suburb of Lagos, where he allegedly administered a poisonous substance in his drink when Ogunike left his cup of drink on a table and went out to urinate.
When Ogunike returned to his seat to continue with his drink, a worker at the bar prevented him and told him that his friend, Ugo, had added a substance in his drink.
Ugo, however denied the allegation. The matter became obvious when Ogunike asked Ugo to drink from his cup since he was the only person he left the drink with when he went out to ease himself.
But he refused. So, Ogunike raised an alarm and accused his friend of wanting to kill him.
He immediately contacted the police at Idimu Division who arrested Ugo and took him to the station.
P.M.NEWS learnt that when he was asked to drink from the cup he refused to take the drink and attempted to escape from the station but was re-arrested.
He reportedly confessed at the station that he actually added a substance in the drink, but that it was not meant to kill his friend.
The police were not convinced by that explanation and therefore charged him to court where he pleaded not guilty.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. M. B. Folami, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till 29 August, 2012, while the court ordered that he should be remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri pending when he will fulfill the bail conditions.
