Taraba University gets funds from councils

The Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Nigeria’s Taraba State has approved the remittance of three percent of the total monthly subvention of councils in the state to the Taraba University.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Yahaya said this while speaking with newsmen in Jalingo.

He said that, the institution would use the funds in staff recruitment and developing infrastructure.

“Initially, we demanded for five per cent remittance but the bureau insisted that our demand was practically impossible.

“We will make judicious use of the three percent in developing our young institution.”

Yahaya, however, lamented that most of the staff in the institution were of low-cadre.

“About 20,000 people applied for lecturing following our advertisement, and nearly all of them were low-cadre staff.

“What we are looking for are senior lecturers and associate professors in order to meet the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) requirement for accreditation.”
