MTN Deploys Ericsson's Latest SSR Technology

Nigerian leading telecommunications company, MTN, says it has deployed Ericsson’s latest wireless packet core network technology, SSR 8020, to provide quality data service to its over 42 million subscribers in the country.

In a statement, MTN said the deal with Ericsson to use the Smart Services Router (SSR) 8020 platform will enable it introduce newer, smarter functions and capabilities to enhance the mobile broadband experience for end users.

The deal also includes deployment of the End-to-End Quality of Service solution in order to offer more innovative mobile broadband products.

The telecoms company, however , noted that subscribers may not immediately begin to enjoy the benefit of the Ericsson’s SSR 8020 technology until towards the end of 2012, when the Evolved Packet Gateway will become fully available.

According to the statement, SSR 8020 has a backplane capacity of up to 16 Tbps, state-of-the-art signalling capacities, an easy-to-use administrative interface, and sophisticated availability and resilience capabilities.

The router also supports 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi network and future upgrades to LTE.

The statement noted that SSR 8020 ability to support all the different types of access networks will bring significant cost savings to MTN because fewer nodes with high scalability can efficiently handle the network bandwidth growth.

“The Evolved Packet Gateway application has the capabilities to support 2G, 3G and 4G and the rapid increase in demand for IP data services.”

MTN’s Chief Technology Officer, Lynda Saint-Nwafor, was quoted as saying that the deployment of SSR 8020 platform will make MTN network in the country more efficient and scalable to cater for the growing data demands of its subscribers.

Lars Lindén, head of Ericsson Sub-Saharan Africa, was also quoted as saying that the flexibility and capacity of the SSR platform will allow MTN Nigeria to introduce newer, smarter functions and capabilities which will enhance the mobile broadband experience for end users.

This according to him includes traffic management capabilities for quality of service differentiation and improved operator billing and rating options.
