Graduating students of the African Church Model College, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos, have been advised to shun cult groups and be good ambassadors of their alma mater.

Giving this advice at the valedictory/prize-giving ceremony of the school, the chairman of the occasion, Dr. Samson Adereti, urged the graduands to work hard to realise their ambitions.

“I need to tell you that you have started another phase in life; the moral and academic discipline you have obtained here should become part of you in your higher institutions.

“Don’t join cult groups or any other ungodly associations in the schools, rather follow the kind of upbringing you have had while in this school and it will be well with you,” Adereti counselled the graduands.

In his own remarks, Mr. Abimbola Olawoye, the vice principal of the school, appealed to the students to be good ambasadors of the school and shun all vices. “Today’s event marks the completion of one stage of your lives towards a successful career. You should be good ambassadors of the school and your families. Put God first in everything you want to do,’’ he told the students.

Olawoye explained that in the last six years of their stay in the school, the students passed through a lot of trials, experienced a lot of hardship; “but here they are celebrating their success and refusal to give up along the way. Let us therefore give thanks to God for shining His light on their path and making it possible for the parents, teachers and all invited guests for being part of the celebration of these children.”

In his opening speech, the Head Boy of the school, Adereti Korede Adebayo, thanked the teachers for moulding them to become responsible and successful students. “Being in African Church Model College is a challenging and unforgetable experience. It is a journey full of ups and downs. I was a small boy when I gained admission into the school. I faced a lot of challenges but I thank my teachers for assisting me to overcome the challenges,” he stated.

Nwarueze Chinenyenwa Elizabeth, the Head Girl of the  college, also thanked the teachers for moulding her into a better individual. In her speech read by by the assistant Head Girl, Olufeko Gloria, she said: “Leadership is indeed a talent. My experience as a leader in this prestigious college justifies the saying that ‘uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.’ I became the acting Head Girl of this school on 20 May 2011. This posed a great challenge for me, as I was also the president of the fellowship executive committee of the school, two positions that were equally challenging.”
