Qualify From Heat, Get N75k, AFN Charges Team Nigeria

In what looks like a desperate bid to ensure that Team Nigerian begin to live up to expectations in London, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, has told Nigerian athletes that a ticket into the next round of the athletics events will be given the sum of  N75,000 ($500).

Athletics event of the ongoing 2012 London Olympics began early today inside the Olympic stadium in London, where some Team Nigeria athletes took part in some races.

Speaking on StarFM early today, Public Relations Officer, PRO, of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, Tony Ubani said: “That we have not won a medal at the Games after a week of competition does not augur well for the country, but we have not given up yet, as athletics that we have won a bulk of our Olympic medals in the past will get underway today.

“For this reason, the AFN has promisedto rward our athletes that qualify from their heats.”

Nojeem Maiyegun won the first Olympic bronze medal for Nigeria in 1964, and since 1992 Games in Barcelona, Nigeria have not failed to win a medal at any Olympics.
