Vigilant security personnel at the St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Ukhegie, Benin City, Sunday arrested a suspected motorcycle thief in the church premises during the early morning service.

This is coming a week after a motorcycle was stolen from the same church, which has not been recovered up till now.

The suspect whose name was given as Monday Amayo of No. 27 Orhue Street, Ikpoba Hill, Benin City was arrested while attempting to remove a motorcycle with registration number Edo QJ 989 USL parked by a worshipper outside the church premises.

Efosa Osakwe who witnessed the incident told P.M. NEWS that Amayo’s movement in the church premises became suspicious as one of the security personnel who noticed his unusual movement while the service was going on, decided to keep an eye on him.

It was gathered that the motorcycle became his next option on realizing that the atmosphere had become un-favourable for him to break into any of the vehicles parked in the premises.

After successfully unlocking the motorcycle, the suspect decided to take it out across the gate when he was accosted by the security personnel who demanded for his proof of ownership which was not forthcoming.

Realising that the game was up, he stuttered to say that he had come to take the bike for repairs, a position he could also not justify.

He was later handed over to men of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) who took him away.
