The Chairman of INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega on Thursday in Abuja swore in three new state Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC).
The new RECs are Mr Habu Zarma-Hanni from Gombe State, Mr Ikoiwak Abasi (Akwa Ibom) and Baritor Kpagih (Rivers).
Jega urged the new appointees to see their appointments as very challenging and part of efforts toward repositioning INEC to respond to its challenges.
He said their appointments were coming at a time when INEC was being reorganised to prepare for improved elections in 2015.
He said INEC was working toward meeting the expectations of Nigerians on deepened democracy based on the delivery of credible elections.
Jega said that based on the experiences of the appointees, they had a lot to contribute toward meeting the people’s expectation.
He stressed that the assignment was a very difficult one with a lot of expectations and pressure.
“If you remain composed and focused and you discharge your responsibility with integrity and transparency, there will be no problem,’’ he assured them.
“No problem is insurmountable if we do our best under the circumstance and we will fulfill the aspirations of all Nigerians for credible elections.’’
Jega said the commissioners would be posted to various states and urged them to relate very well with their host communities.
“Make sure that the relationship is above board, in particular, make sure that in all you do you reflect the required integrity and the impartiality that is required with the conduct of your jobs,’’ he said.
INEC later announced the deployment of the RECs as follows: Abasi (Rivers), Zarma-Hinna ( Plateau) and Kpagih (Edo). (NAN)
