Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi has said that the poor performance of Team Nigeria in the about to be concluded London 2012 Olympic Games is a bitter pill for him to swallow.
Abdullahi, while addressing a world press conference Thursday in Stratford, London on the outing of Team Nigeria in this year’s Summer Games, lamented that the situation is a national crisis that must be tackle immediately for the future of sports in the country.
The Minister, who said he won’t indulge in blaming anybody for the dismal outing, but will see it as a wakeup call for all stakeholders in Nigerian sports to rebuild an already battered structure.
“The situation was a necessary disequilibrium required for serious actions and drastic change. We will not allow this opportunity to pass.”
“Having been appointed Minister of Sports only two months to the Olympics, I have had to learn very quickly. And I have not received a better lesson than in the last two weeks of London 2012 Games.
“We have been hoping too much on luck, but for once, God is telling us he’s not a magician, the minister declared”.
Abdullahi commended all the athletes that represented Nigeria at the Olympics, saying that they tried their best, but agreed that their best could not produce medals for the country.
“Our athletes tried their best. We can only hope to build on what they have done. According to a Yoruba saying, as you pose for a camera that is how you will appear in the picture. There’s no magic,” the politician said.
Other officials that attended the press conference with the minister included Chef de Mission of Team Nigeria, Patrick Ekeji; President of Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, Engr. Sani Ndanusa and a member of the NOC, Habu Gumel.
