The season five of the MTN sponsored Project Fame West Africa music competition kicked off on Saturday last week with an opening gala show.

After auditions in 10 major cities in West Africa, 18 finalists emerged, but only 15 made it to the Project Fame academy.

Last year’s winner of the show, Monica Ogar, opened the stage with her two new singles entitled Tomorrow and Below. She dazzled the audience, rocked the stage and clearly re-affirmed herself as she sang and danced to the recently released singles.

Shortly after Monica’s performance, the new contestants came out one after the other to sing their way into the Academy. Christian Adeyefa began the contest with Craig David’s Unbelievable, followed by Grace Mark who performed Always Love You by Whitney Houston, Sonia Obi- Natural Woman by Aretha Franklyn, Anthony- This Love by Daniel Jones, Daniel- Home by Chris Daughty, Chinyere- Greatest by Whitney Houston, Musulyn- Falling by Alicia Keys, Marvellous- Soul Provider by Michael Bolton and Joshua- Liberian Girl by Michael Jackson.

Others are Tega- Set Fire To The Rain by Adele, Roland- Hero by Enrique Iglesias, Kemi- Let’s Talk About Love by Celine Dion, Didi- When A Man Loves A Woman by Michael Bolton, Oyinkansade- Let Me Love by Mario, Edward- As Long As You Love Me by Mario,

Having raised the bar so high and with very high class performances, the judges were left with a not-so-easy task of analysing their performances and also determining who stays and who leaves. The suspense was lifted temporarily as Iyanya, the Project Fame season one winner wowed the audience with his hit track, Kukere.

After a session of deliberation from the judges which now include Germany-based Ade Bantu, Daniel from Sierra Leone, Roland from Ilorin and Anthony from Lagos bowed out of Project Fame Season 5 stage, leaving the race to the other 15 contestants who in the next 10 weeks will face the faculty in the academy, battling their way to fame and fortune.
