UNILAG not UNIBEN Nigeria’s first in web ranking
University of Lagos has been ranked number one among Nigerian universities, in the latest webometric ranking of 100 universities in Africa.
It is ranked 16th in Africa.
Mrs. I.A. Salaam, director of Office of Advancement at the university drew attention to the ranking, sharply contradicting the claim by the University of Benin recently that it topped the web ranking.
Six South African universities led by University of Cape Town sat atop the ranking for July. Cairo University and the American University in Cairo occupied the 7th and 8th positions.
The Rhodes University in South Africa, University of the Western Cape, also in South Africa, University of Dar es salaam, University of Johannesburg, University of Botswana, University of Nairobi and University of Ghana occupied the ninth to 15 positions, in that order.
University of Ilorin and the University of Ibadan were ranked 39th and 40th respectively, while University of Benin that triggered controversy over its earlier claim was ranked 45th.
The web ranking was done by 4International Colleges and Universities, which describes itself as an international higher education and search engine, featuring reviews and web rankings of 11,000universities and colleges in 200 countries.
It claims that: “Universities and Colleges are ranked by our exclusive 4icu.org University Web Ranking. The ranking has been published since May 2005. Since then the ranking methodology has been periodically fine-tuned in order to provide better results.
The current ranking is based upon an algorithm including three unbiased and independent web metrics extracted from three different search engines”.
