Fleeing Rape Suspect Re-Arrested

A youth who was standing trial for alleged rape escaped from police custody at Ago Okota Police division, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, was later rearrested.

The 20-year old Chiemere Agu was earlier arraigned before Itire Magistrate’s court in Lagos. But he managed to beat all the security personnel at Ago Police Division and escaped from police custody.

After he was re-arrested, he reportedly confessed that he did so in order not go to prison for the alleged offence.

P.M.NEWS gathered that Agu, who is now in prison custody, was arraigned before the court for allegedly raping an 11-year old girl who is their neigbour’s daughter (names withheld).

When he was arraigned, he pleaded not guilty.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs A. O. Awogboro granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

He was taken to the station for onward trip to Kirikiri Prison, Apapa, Lagos. When he got wind that he was going to be detained at prison in Kirikiri, he escaped from police custody.

It took a combined team of police officers who searched the whole area and re-arrested him.

He is now facing two different charges at the same court.

He pleaded not guilty. He was also granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Agu was remanded in prison pending when he will meet the bail conditions.

The matter was adjourned till 29 September, 2012 for mention.
