Lagos Drivers Support New Traffic Law
Commuter bus drivers plying Obalende, Ajah, Victoria Island, CMS, and Agbongbon areas of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, have promised to comply with the Lagos State government on the new traffic law recently passed in the state.
They praised the Governor Babatunde Fashola-led Action Congress of Nigeria government and the state House of Assembly members over the new law which they described as a perfect step in repositioning the state traffic to meet the 21st century standard in traffic laws and regulations.
Some of those who spoke with P.M.NEWS on the development said they were ready to obey the laws to the letter, but urged the state government to organise sensitisation campaigns in major parks across the state for commuter drivers before its enforcement commences.
This, they said becomes necessary as majority of the drivers are illiterate and incapable of comprehending the nitty gritty of the new traffic law as passed by the state House of Assembly.
They appealed to drivers in general in the state to see the new law as a form of sanitisation and repositioning of the state for the safety and progress of Lagosians in particular and Nigerians in general.
John Omenai, advises Lagosians and drivers to embrace the new law since it is meant for the protection of lives and properties.
“My advise to Lagosians and drivers in general is to embrace the new traffic law enacted in the state. We should see it from a positive perspective. We must not be biased with the passage of the law as there is no sensitive and responsible government that would allow recalcitrant drivers to wantonly destroy the lives and properties of its citizens,” Omenai stated.
He stressed that the habits of eating, making and receiving phone calls, smoking and even playing heavy music while on the wheels have become a disturbing development in the state. To this end, he said the new law has really looked into the various areas affecting the general well-being of Lagosians.
“With the maturity exhibited by commanders Ayuba of Olowu LASTMA office, Oki Bakare and Kayode Odunuga of Iponri unit, drivers plying the axis would surely comply with the new traffic law as their conducts have given drivers hope in the area,” Rafiu Ojo, another motorist said.
