Obe, Bello Worry Over Nation’s Insecurity
The Institute of Security in Nigeria recently held its seventh annual conference with the theme, “Choice of revitalizing Security Services and Law Enforcement for Enhanced productivity and Effectiveness,” in Lagos.
Speaking at the conference, the president of the institute, Professor Isaac Adalemo, said: “Insecurity and threat to the maintenance of law and order has assumed a frightening and alarming dimension in Nigeria.
“The threat sceptre of terrorism looms large and thereafter the very existence of the nation. The activities of Boko Haram and similar militant groups easily underscore the rising stakes in respect of their destructive companies.”
On the way out, he said: “Our security system must be thoroughly overhauled and strengthened. It is about making realistic changes, which will enable us put our house in order and earn the respect of other nations,” Professor Adalemo stated.
The former UNILAG VC Professor Oye Ibidapo-Obe in his goodwill message, said: “Indeed, security in Nigeria requires a total overhaul in order to attain effectiveness and efficiency. Making progress within the security system needs great coordinated attention for the exercise not to be in futility,” he stated.
Ibidapo-Obe, who is the president, Nigerian Academy of Science, urged security agencies to partner with the institute to get a comprehensive blue print on the security system in the country.
He further suggested that the government should fund very well the building of a modern and functional security equipment and facilities, adding that this would guarantee the realisation of an efficient security network.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Rahman Ade Bello, in his speech, urged the government, the institute of security and other stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the threat posed by insecurity in the country, noting that “security is vital and this cannot be overemphasized, and we must secure our environment before we can bring in investors,” he stated.
