FIFA World Cup: Nigeria’s Falconets spank Korea

Nigeria’s Falconets on Sunday began their FIFA U-20 Women’s Cup campaign on a promising note with a 2-0 spanking of their Korea Republic counterpart at Komaba Stadium, Saitama, Japan.

The match came moments after the competition’s opening match in group B between Brazil and Italy which ended 1-1.

With the victory, Nigeria now top the group with three points, followed by Brazil and Italy with one point each while Korea Republic is at the rear with no point.

Falconets two goals were scored each half by Ngozi Okobi in the 15th minute and Ugochi Oparanozie in the 67th minute.

Gloria Akujobi, the Media Officer of Flamingoes, in a telephone interview with NAN shortly after the match, said that Falconets’ victory was a good way to start the competition.

“I am happy for the victory; it will spur them to more victories. I am happy for them, because they will be encouraged to do more.

“First match gives one confidence,” Akujobi said.

Akujobi also expressed confidence in the technical bench saying the bench would definitely learn from mistakes made from their previous matches at the competition.

“I can assure you the team will continue to improve as the competition progresses,” she added.

Falconets coach, Edwin Okon, had before that match declared that his girls were not under any pressure facing Korea in their first match at the competition.
