Amosun lifts ban on transport unions, launch 77 buses

The Ogun Government on Thursday lifted the ban on the activities of transport unions in Ijebu-Igbo and Ijebu-Ode local government areas of the state.

Senator Ibikunle Amosun, the Governor of the state, announced the lifting of the ban in Abeokuta at the launch of 77 Bus Mass Transit Scheme (BMT).

Government suspended activities of transport unions in the areas last year, following clashes among their members, which led to the loss of lives and property.

The governor lifted the ban following an appeal by officials of Parks and Garages as well as principal officers of the state branches of the National Union of Road Transport Workers and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria.

Officials of the two unions also promised to conduct their activities in a peaceful and responsible manner.

Alhaji Ayo Ogunsolu, General Manager, Ogun Parks and Garages Development Board, told newsmen after the programme that the board recommended the lifting of the ban because of appeals from the unions.

Ogunsolu said that the senior members of the unions in the areas had learnt their lessons and had given assurances that they would always ensure peace at the parks.

He said the board would soon organise a stakeholders’ forum where the officials of the unions would formally sign an undertaking to ensure peace in their areas.

He, however, warned that anyone caught causing trouble would be made to face the wrath of the law.
