NABTEB records increase in exam malpractice

The National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) on Wednesday in Benin City disclosed that the Board recorded an increase in malpractice during the May/June, 2012 examinations.

The Registrar/Chief Executive of NABTEB, Dr. Olatunde Aworanti who made this disclosure, said an increase in the number of candidates that sat for the examinations also brought corresponding increase in examination malpractice. Out of the 143, 755 candidates, 5, 878 cases of malpractice were recorded.

He however said the Board recorded a 35 per cent increase in the enrolment for the May/June 2012 examinations conducted by the Board.

Aworanti who announced the release of National Business Certificate (NBC) and National Technical Certificate (NTC), said the Board also recorded a 34 per cent in number of centers at which the exams were written.

Analysis of the enrolment encompasses 16 engineering trades, six construction trades, nine miscellaneous trades and three business trades.

“The examination was conducted in 1,750 schools against 1,306 schools in 2011, representing an increase of 34.0 per cent. In the enrollment, a total of 147, 233 candidates enrolled for the examinations, showing an increase of 34.6 per cent, as against 109, 416 candidates for 2011,” Dr. Aworanti said.

A drastic reduction in the failure rate of candidates was further recorded as 59,100 (41.1 per cent) of the 143, 755 candidates scored above five credits, including English and mathematics.

Aworanti however said in as much as the increase in the enrolment of candidates was appreciated, the recorded figure of 147, 233 was still much below expectation in meeting the social-economic aspiration of the nation and the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan.
