Obeten, ex-commissioner in Cross River dies

EMMA UNA, Calabar

Mr Raymond Obeten, the immediate past commissioner for Youths and Sports Development in Cross River State, southsouth Nigeria, died Wednesday afternoon in Calabar, the state capital.

Obeten, who was appointed by Governor Liyel Imoke into his executive council in May 2007, served as the sports commissioner for four years until February 2012 when the Executive Council was dissolved and after Imoke’s re-election he was not reappointed.

Obeten who is said to have died of complications arising from liver disease, had a Master’s degree in English.

Before his foray into politics, he was a lecturer in the English and Literary Studies Department of the University of Calabar.

“He passed on about two hours ago and as I speak to you now, I am in the Anatomy Department of the University of Calabar to deposit his body,” one of his aides told P.M.NEWS on phone.

Imoke is yet to react to the sudden death of Obeten as news of his demise is slowly spreading around Calabar with people seen discussing the sad news about a man generally known as “the quiet man of peace”.

Obeten, who was in his early 50s, was married and had children.
