Nigeria and China have flagged-off a 10-day joint marine research cruise to further strengthen their bilateral relations for the development of the maritime sector.

Speaking at the ceremony, which held at the Apapa Ports, the Acting Executive Director of the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR), Dr. Emmanuel Ajao, said it was gratifying that both countries considered marine science research as a top priority for knowledge generation, sharing and for innovation in the development of our ocean space.

“This joint oceanography cruise is the first of its kind between our two countries and indeed the first of its kind between an African state and the Chinese government.

“This cruise will conduct marine scientific research survey in the western Nigerian continental shelf within the Nigerian territorial waters for the next 10 days.

“The fields of expertise for the conduct of the survey will broadly be in the fields of marine geology, geophysics, biological oceanography, marine modelling, physical and chemical oceanography, among others.

“This exercise will promote and strengthen the existing friendly relations between our two countries and lead to closer relations between marine institutions and personnel in both countries.
