Murder of Kaduna motorcyclist by cop ignites tension

A Nigerian mobile police officer on Wednesday, at close range twice shot a commercial motorcyclist in the head in Kaduna, killing him and causing panic and confusion among commuters in the city.

The man killed, Alhaji Umaru Dan-Michika, left two children.

A witness who gave his name as Ibrahim Usman, said the “trigger-happy” police officer was among a police team driving a truck along the Stadium Roundabout.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Olufemi Adenaike, who confirmed the incident in a telephone interview told NAN that “the inspector general of police had directed that the killer policeman be dismissed and charged to court immediately.



“We are not killers, we are friends of the public and will not tolerate any act of misconduct and indiscipline in the force.

 The situation is under control and I am personally on top of it. I urge Kaduna residents to remain calm and go about their lawful activities, “ Adenaike said.

Usman said that after negotiating the roundabout, “the mobile policemen started shouting and one of them aimed at the motorcyclist and shot him twice in the head.



“They continued to shoot as they drove towards Kachia road along the Kaduna Main Bridge.

The incident forced people to abandon their businesses and scamper for safety.

“We learnt that the motorcyclist lived at Down Quarters, a suburb at the Nigerian Railway Corporation Quarters,’’ Usman said.
