Polio vaccine team attacked, 2 cops killed

Yet to be identified gunmen have shot dead two police men attached to a team of Polio Immunization officials in the Nigerian city of Kano.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, who confirmed the incident to P.M.NEWS, said a woman was also injured during the attack Tuesday afternoon.

According to the police, the gun men on foot ambushed the two police men who had received a distress call over an incident, and shot at them.

“It was in response to the distress call that they were ambushed by their attackers who shot and killed the two police men instantly while a woman also identified as a member of the immunization team sustained injury and is currently on admission for medical treatment,” Idris said.

Residents of Kofar Dawanau where the incident occurred said they had several gunshots which sent people panicking.

Traders at the popular Dawanau grain markets also ran for safety as the market came to a momentary close.
CP Idris, however, said Police have spread their dragnet to track down the local terrorists suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect.

P.M.NEWS reporter who visited the area observed that men of the Joint Task Force have already cordoned off the area, with Armoured Personnel Carriers positioned at strategic locations across the Kano city.

Security alert has been heightened in the northern Nigeria commercial city as Air Force helicopter hovers in the air.

Tertiary institutions and government installations are also under heavy security guard, just as the State Security Service, SSS, and other security Intelligence have been deployed into flash points believed to be hideouts of members of the Boko Haram sect.

“The incident is an unfortunate one and we are not taking chances. I assure you that all the security agencies have gone down to work; and we are determined to track down the terrorists.

“We have already deployed our men to the area and other security-risk zones. In no distant time, we hope to round them up,” Idris said.
