Bloody Monday In Ogun As Robbers Kill 5 Cops, 2 Others

It was a bloody Monday in Ogun state, southwest, Nigeria as at least five policemen and two civilians were killed in a separate robbery incidents carried out by a 15-man gang.

In one of the robbery attacks that occurred in Abeokuta, the robbers stormed an Apostolic Church located at Ijemo – Agbadu area in Abeokuta South local government area of the state at around 2.30am before an alarm was raised by some people who informed the state police command.

A source said on arrival at the scene of the incident, a police patrol team led by an Inspector ran into the robbers’ ambush.

The source said that on sighting the police, the robbers opened fire on the driver of the Quick Response Squad (QRS) team and he died on the spot.

Also killed by the robbers, apart from the driver, were two other police officers of the rank of Inspectors while two others were seriously injured.

Information gathered by newsmen this morning in Abeokuta also had it that the same robbery gang had earlier operated at World Oil filling station along Lalubu road within Abeokuta metropolis killing two other policemen and a 12-year old boy simply identified as Mubarak.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that another robbery attack took place at Ibafo at about 8.30 p.m. on Sunday and the victims lost an undisclosed amount of money and other valuables.

Our source said that the robbers at Labulu area wore Mobile Police uniform and operated in a commando style.

They shot indiscriminately and the bullets hit a boy hawking sachet water and two of the policemen around the area.

Speaking with newsmen at the scene of the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP Muyiwa Adejobi said it was the same gang that operated at Ibafo that invaded Abeokuta.

According to him, “the gang had before the Ibafo and Abeokuta incidents already snatched a sport utility vehicle, SUV, and with that they attacked a hotel located along Abiola Way in Abeokuta before heading to the Apostolic Church vicarage at Ijemo Agbadu area of the town where they killed the three policemen and injured two others.”

Adejobi said the robbers were professionals who had positioned themselves at different strategic areas before the rescue team ran into their ambush.

He confirmed that two of their officers died on the spot, while the other died on the way to the hospital.

He also  said the injured officers are being treated to at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-aba, Abeokuta.

One person has been arrested in connection with the attack, he added.

Meanwhile, the Ogun state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, who during the weekend received the best security conscious governor in the whole West African states, has directed security agencies to track down the criminals whose activities led to the death of five police officers and two civilians in the state and bring them to justice.

The governor who visited the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, to see those that were injured, said  the robbers will not go unpunished, assuring the good people of the state that they will soon be apprehended.

While assuring citizens of Ogun of adequate security, Amosun said he had ordered the police and other security agencies to fish out the robbers, especially those that sustained injuries and bring them to justice.

“We have notified all hospitals to report any treatment of gunshot injuries. This is an isolated incident, there will be no comfort zone
for robbers in this state,” Amosun warned.

He praised the brave police officers who died during the gun duel, noting that in spite of the ambush laid for them by the robbers they fought gallantly.

Amosun said the officers would not die in vain, promising that government would take care of the families of the deceased and those that sustained injuries.

He commiserating with the families of the deceased and promised government’s continuous support for all the security agencies in the state to ensure a crime-free state,
especially as the sallah festival is around the corner.
