It will be tough battles for the Nigerian male and female Number one players as they play top seeds in the second round of the Men and Women’s Singles of the ongoing Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship on Wednesday.
In the Men’s Singles, Shehu Lawal will have his hands full when he confronts tournament’s number three seed, Japanese Kento Takeuchi in one of the matches at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan. Adamu Sanni will face sixth seed, Egyptian Sherif Sabry, while Clifford Enosoregbe will go to war with Number 2 seed, South African Ruan Roelofse.
Lopez Perez of Spain will lock horns with Mario Eckardt of Germany, Jordi Munoz- Abreu of Venezuela plays Alessadro Petrone of Italy, Karim Maamoun of Egypt takes on Mark Fynn of Zimbabwe, Andre Gaspar Murta of Portugal plays Alessandro Brega of Italy.
In the Women’s Singles, Nigeria’s number one, Fatimah Abinu will settles scores with top seed, Nina Bratchikova from Russia, while Blessing Anuna takes on Chanels Simmonds from South African in another tough fixture.
In other fixtures, Madagascar, Zarah Razafimahatratra will battle China’s Jia-Jing Lu, Tomova Viktoriya of Bulgaria plays Dalila Jakupovic of Slovakia. Swiss Conny Perrin takes on Anja. Preslan of Slovakia,
In some of the first round matches decided Tuesday, the pair of Nigerians Osariemen Airhumwunde and Rita Obasigie were beaten by the duo of Nidhi Chimula of India and Sofia Dmitrieva of Russia, 1-6,1-6 in the Women’s Doubles, so also were the duo of Cristie Agugbom and Blessing Samuel who lost to Valeria Patiuk of Isreal and Zarah Razafimahatratra 1-6,0-6.
The pair of Destiny Ford Da Silva and Sunday Igbinovia were made to labour to lose in their match against the duo of Alessandro Petrone of Italy and Borja Rodriguez Manzano of Spain in 7-6, 4-6, 7-10 game.
