Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Olayinka Oladunjoye has attributed low performance of students in various examinations to the non-usage of instructional materials by teachers to teach them.
Oladunjoye spoke at the 4th edition of Festival of Instructional Materials, LASFIM, held at the Lagos State Education Resource Centre, Ojodu, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, at the weekend.
She maintained that teachers should be encouraged to imbibe using the latest materials for teaching so as to improve the grasp and learning system of students, which would in turn prepare them for any future examination in the country.
The commissioner, who was represented by the Director of Finance and Administration in the Ministry, Mrs. Ebun Oladimeji stated that the investment on the resource centre had started yielding results as people and organisations using the place had started testifying to the advantages of the centre.
She added that the state government would continue to provide all educational facilities which would further enhance teachings and equip teachers in the state.
The commissioner said that the centre was not just marking a festival but rather organising competitions to showcase the creativity in the lives of students and teachers.
Director of the Centre, Mr. Joseph Alao, explained that the illustrating materials exhibited by students and teachers of participating schools were part of the activities lined up to prepare all schools in the state towards standing on their own in the production of essential materials for learning was concern.
Alao expressed appreciation to the state government, which had made everything easy with provision of all basic needs that made it possible for recording all the feats, especially in printing of instructional posters and charts, letter heads, file jackets, school registers, diaries, among others.
Other services rendered at the centre include field services like designing and production of instructional materials, capacity building of teachers on production and utilisation of such materials.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Omolara Erogbogbo, commended the management of the centre for inculcating knowledge on the participants, adding that this would go a long way to ease learning and teaching of students and teachers respectively.
