Teenager In Court Over Robbery

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded a teenager, who allegedly robbed passengers of two BlackBerry handsets at gunpoint

Magistrate Taiwo Akanni remanded Lukman Mohammed at the Ikoyi Prisons, pending the advice of the state’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the case.

The 18-year old Mohammed was charged with conspiracy and armed robbery, but the court could not take his plea as the magistrate said that he needed the DPP’s advice.

The prosecutor, Insp Samson Ekikere, had submitted that the teenager robbed some passersby of their handsets and money. “The accused and others now at large, on Sept. 28 at about 8:30p.m. at Ayoola Bus Stop on Abesan Estate, Ipaja, in Lagos, robbed Tunde and Tolulope Ashabi of their phones and cash,” he said.

The prosecutor said that the teenager also robbed others of two Nokia handsets, two Starcom handsets and some money. “He was, however, arrested by the police when the victims and other passersby shouted for help,” Ekikere said.

The prosecutor submitted that the defendant had no fixed address and occupation, adding that the offences contravened Sections 1 and 5 of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act. The case has been adjourned till 3 December for mention.
