8th November, 2012
The Ogun State Cricket Foundation, a Non Governmental Organisation, established to promote and develop the game of cricket in Ogun State, will tomorrow at the MKO Abiola Stadium cricket pitch, Abeokuta, hold a commemorative T20 cricket match between the Ogun State National Sports Festival Team 2012 and Nigeria U-17 team as one of the events to mark the 85th birthday of one of their trustees, Chief Lamidi Sofenwa.
The General Manager/COO of Nigeria Cricket Federation, NCF, George Wiltshire, says that Chief Sofenwa has contributed significantly to the development of cricket not only in Comprehensive High School, where he was the pioneer Principal but also to the Ogun State Cricket Association and also to the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF).
In 2008, when the U-17 North West Africa Cricket Championship (NWACC) tournament was hosted in Abeokuta, he was one of those responsible for getting the then Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel to receive the NCF delegation including the ACA CEO Cassim Suleiman in an Executive Council meeting of the Ogun State Government. He later donated a trophy for the tournament.
It was gathered that he accompanied the NCF delegation that paid a courtesy visit to the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports to encourage him to continue to focus on cricket in Ogun State early this year, and to incorporate the cricket pitch at the MKO Abiola Stadium.
