The Super Falcons of Nigeria on Sunday lost the bronze medal of the 8th African Women Championship, AWC, to the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon,
who won the third place match 1-0 in Equatorial Guinea.

The Cameroonians, who lost their first match of the competition 2-1 to Nigeria when both teams clashed in the group stage two weeks ago, scored the lone goal in the first half through Gaelle Enganamouit.

The performance of the Falcons in this year’s AWC was not just dismal; it was their worst showing since the beginning of the tournament about 16 years ago.

It was also the first time that the Falcons failed to bring a medal to Nigeria in the history of the tournament, which they have won for record six times.

Before this year’s AWC, the Lionesses defeated the Falcons and stopped them from qualifying for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Their worst outing before today’s game was at the 2008 edition of the AWC in the same Equatorial Guinea, where they finished third with a bronze medal.

The Nigerian team were gunning for a seventh title but had their dream aborted last week Wednesday, when they fell 1-0 to the Banyana Banyana of South Africa in the semi final stage.

The bronze medal, which could have served as a consolation to the country was lost to Cameroon today, leaving the Coach Kadiri Ikhana-led squad as the worst assembled senior national female team in about 20 years.

The Falcons first surrendered the Africa Championship trophy in 2008, when they were beaten at the semi-finals stage by Equatorial Guinea, who went on to win their first title on home soil that year.

However, in the final match played Sunday evening, the host nation, Equatorial Guinea whitewashed South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 4-0 to lift the AWC trophy for the second time, while the South Africans went home with the silver medal.
