An amateur boxer, Adekanbi Wasiu has charged the National Sports Commission, NSC and the Nigeria Boxing Federation, NBF to use the National Sports Festival, tagged “Eko 2012” to discover the amateur boxers that would represent the country at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Wasiu, who competes in the 48kg weight category, stated that there is need for the NSC and the NBF to send scouts to Lagos State to discover budding boxing talents that can help the country win medals at the next of edition of the Olympics billed for Brazil.

The Osun State-born pugilist opined that there is need for the country to use the festival to begin preparation if she must perform creditably well at the Olympics “I’m still shocked that Nigerian boxers to the last Olympics did not get close to the medal’s zone, reason is not farfetched because we failed to prepare. So, I expect the concerned authorities to use this festival to discover the boxers that can win medals for the country at the next Olympics”.

He also canvassed for the training and re-training of boxing coaches if the country must return to the zenith of boxing.

“Boxing is a scientific sport, but the Nigerian boxing coaches are yet to wake up to that, the failure of our boxers at the London 2012 Olympics is a clear picture of the instructions that the coaches gave to them”.

On which state that he feels would dominate the pugilist sport at the Games, the boxer  can’t stake his money on any state, but would like the most prepared state to win, “Like I said earlier, early preparation is paramount, Lagos has good boxers but that does not mean they would out-punch other states that are well prepared, the state that is well prepared would win the medals, I’m sure of that”.
