The Callous Murder Of Toyin Hamzat

editorial

Last Sunday’s murder of the former chairman, Ikeja Local Government, Toyin Hamzat, by gunmen in Sagamu, Ogun State, has again raised pertinent issues about the abysmal state of insecurity in the country.

Hamzat, a chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, who was retiring to his country home from a public function had a lady friend and his nephew in his car, when he was callously shot at close range.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the assassination may have been masterminded by the estranged husband of the lady who was with Hamzat that fateful Sunday.

It is encouraging that the police claimed to have arrested five suspects including the said lady’s husband. We hope this will not be another bad case of police’s ineffectiveness in cracking atrocious criminality.

Hamzat’s case has cast a sense of deja vu on the watchers, waiting anxiously to see how this latest puzzle would be unravelled.

We advise government to, for the sake of defenseless citizens, equip, train, fund and increase the personnel of the police.

We enjoin the police to get to the root of Hamzat’s murder and bring the culprits to book. This should not go the way of Bola Ige, Dipo Dina and others.
