Juan Mata and Fernando Torres scored a goal each in the 3-1 defeat of Monterrey FC Thursday afternoon, and handed Chelsea a place in the final of the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup holding in Japan.

Mata netted the opener in the 18th minute, while Torres scored the second in the 46th minute. Chelsea’s third was an own goal through Darvin Chavez, who was under pressure in the game.

Eden Hazard and David came close to scoring early in the tie, but their shots went off target in the one-sided clash.

African Cup of Nations bound Nigerian star, John Mikel Obi, whom the commentator described as a goal-shy player, unleashed a shot in the 32nd minute but the effort did not hit target.

Chelsea created many other chances but failed to convert them, while Monterrey also got their share when Aldo De Nigris’ header beat goalkeeper Petr Cech but went wide.

With the game getting out of their grip, Monterrey came out fighting to get something from the tie. De Nigris, who threatened Chelsea’s rear with his daring incursons however scored a stoppage time consolation goal against the Blues.

Chelsea will now face Brazil’s Corinthians in the final on Sunday, 16 December, while Monterrey play losing semi-finalists, Al-Ahly of Egypt in the third-place playoff.
