How To Take Control Of Your Life In 2013 (3)

This is the third in the series of my 7-part articles (How to Take Control Of Your Life in 2013). My suggestion is that you read this edition very slowly and with concentration because it may be the most important message you would ever read from me.

By a combination of circumstances and events, I had travelled to the United States of America a couple of years back as a guest of the US government. While we were meant to visit and return after few weeks. I joined 12 other people from around the world for a tour of the U.S. I was the only Nigerian on the programme. It was an enthralling experience. We toured six states and visited several U.S government agencies. I had the opportunity of meeting journalists in different parts of that country. We were hosted by many interesting families in different parts of U.S. In all the states we visited, we were lodged in five-star hotels, all expenses borne by the U.S government. It was a life-changing experience.

Altogether, we spent five weeks as guests of the U.S government. However, at the end of the programme, I took a decision to stay behind to accomplish two things. One, to cool off a bit and stay away from the harsh political environment at home and, two, to see if I could get a good job to take care of my embarrassing financial position back in Nigeria then. After the programme, I toured seven other states different from the ones we had visited. I still had enough money (we were each given $10,000) from what I saved from the stipend we were given by our host. I was so excited about what I was seeing and felt good with myself. Eventually, I settled down in Boston, Massachusset, with an uncle.

Then, a few things started to happen. My uncle had managed to get a job for me in a supermarket as an attendant. While in the shop one day, my eyes strayed to a book on a shelf. It was Awaken the Giant Within, by Anthony Robbins. I bought the book. It was a Friday. On Saturday, I went to a pool side to read the book. I had not read more than two chapters in the book before I began to feel some unease in my spirit. I just could not contain the insight oozing out of the book. Then suddenly, it appeared as if I heard a voice saying: “this is not the place of my assignment for you.” The voice echoed again and again. I could not read any further. I just stood up and went to the house. I locked myself inside the room and read more of the book as I took time to reflect on so many things.

What dampened my spirit the more was when I saw a former Deputy Managing Director of a mortgage firm in Nigeria, engaged as a security man in a shoe shop in the United States. I also saw a few professors from top Nigerian universities doing menial jobs. Before travelling to the U.S., I had distinguished myself as business writer and reporter. I had obtained my Master’s Degree and obtained relevant training in financial journalism. I was just wondering if I was going to throw away all my experience, all the goodwill I had built, bury my dream of becoming a journalist of repute and begin to work as a waiter. There was a revolt inside me. And that voice came again: “This is not my place of assignment for you. I have a role for you in Nigeria.”

My uncle came in shortly after that and I told him without mincing words that I would be leaving for Nigeria the following week. He was shocked beyond words. I stopped going to that supermarket. We used the rest of the week to shop. And the following Saturday, he drove me in his car to Logan Airport where I boarded a Lufthansa plane to Nigeria (my return ticket was still valid).

It was when I returned to Nigeria that I met an individual who has been a mentor of immense value to me . In Nigeria, I was at home for about three months brooding over what had happened. It was at that stage that I encountered that individual. He shared an insight that turned things around for me and I believe it would do same for you if you put into practice what I am sharing in the rest of this article. My mentor asked me to take a look at my skills and my talents and ask myself if those talents had disappeared as a result of my misadventure in the US. He also asked me to produce the results which my worrying over the past three months had produced.

This is what he said: “My friend, let me say this to you, if your road has not been rough; if you had not encountered challenges on your way to the top, I would have suggested you stop and examine yourself. He added: “There is just one thing to hold on to in any crisis you face in life and it is the talent God has  endowed you with. That is what would bail you out”.   Read the rest of his message from my mentor: “The greatest gateway to lasting wealth is to identify what you are passionate about, brand that passion and build your entire life around it. A great brand can withstand the toughest economic meltdowns. Companies can fold up but an individual who has managed to build a great brand around his passion becomes a permanent wealth generator, an equivalent of a modern automatic cash machine.

“Joseph’s (of the Judo Christian Bible) passion was in dream interpretation. Solomon’s passion was in the use of God’s wisdom to speedily resolve complex challenges. Daniel was endowed with the spirit of excellence. David became a man after God’s heart because of his unusual ability to praise and worship God. Great wealth came to these individuals when their passions became branded.  To create lasting wealth, you must identify your own passion and brand it. Someone has called it “vocational signature code”. Just as the signature on your cheque can get out money from the bank, your unique vocational signature can draw any resources it desires from the bank of life.

“Apart from becoming wealthy, when you are a brand, you also attract these blessings. First, you will be famous. Joseph was famous. Solomon was famous. Second, you will have influence that goes beyond your immediate surroundings. Third, if you manage what God has put in your care well, he will multiply your wealth such that you would become a channel of distribution to others. Fourth, as a brand planted by God, you cannot be displaced. Fifth, as a brand solely devoted to fulfilling God’s purpose and agenda, enemies cannot prevail against you because if they do so, they will be contending with God. And mark this: even if anyone plans secretly to harm you, God will reverse the plan.”

That message turned things around for me. I returned to my first love (writing and reporting) and amazing things started to happen after that. God has been so good.

There is such an enormous power that is activated once you discover what you have been wired to do and concentrate on building your life around it. And that is why you must follow the instructions at the bottom of this article. Completing it properly would make it possible for you to learn about a vital key that would help you to unlock your personal powers and begin to do exploits. •Step back for a day and check if you are in the centre of God’s assignment for your life. Ask questions. Check with friends. Look at the constant desires in your heart as this may be a clue. Once you discover your passion, from that moment commit your entire being to pushing to a great brand.
